1 Fellowship position for the 2022-2023 Fellowship Year.
of Recommendation requested for applying
Our ACGME-approved fellowship in Neuromuscular Medicine is designed to provide the neurologist with expertise in diagnosis and management of patients with peripheral nerve, neuromuscular junction, and muscle disease. The fellowship is structured to meet the certification requirements developed by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for Added Qualifications in Neuromuscular Medicine. A second year of advanced study is available by special arrangement, and includes a substantial component of basic or clinical research.
The fellowship includes experiences in both our outpatient neuromuscular clinics at University of Illinois Hospital (including Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) sponsored Neuromuscular Disorders Clinics, an ALS association sponsored Center of Excellence, and a CMT Association Center of excellence) and at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center (JBVA). Pediatric neuromuscular experience is an integral part of the program, with fellows rotating through the pediatric neuromuscular clinics at Shriners Children’s Hospital. The fellow will also gain experience with inpatient neuromuscular consultation. The time commitment in the electromyography laboratory is flexible but fellows are expected to master standard electrodiagnostic techniques. Fellows are also provided the opportunity to learn advanced electromyographic techniques such as single fiber electromyography. Peripheral nerve and muscle pathology are reviewed in scheduled conferences. The fellow works directly with the neuromuscular attendings and the neuromuscular genetic counselor to provide state of the art genetic diagnostic testing. A clinical or basic research during the fellowship research project suitable for publication or presentation is a required fellowship component.
