Our fellowship is an ACGME accredited, one year program. We provide ample and diverse training opportunities in neuromuscular medicine and electrodiagnostic study. Our fellowship program consists of eleven neuromuscular teaching faculty members (nine adult and two pediatric neurologists), teaches at three teaching facilities (University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham VA Medical Center, and Children’s Hospital of Alabama). Fellows participate in patient care at the Neuromuscular Clinic, adult and pediatric Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Clinic, and ALS Clinics. In addition to routine electrodiagnostic studies, fellows have an opportunity to learn advanced electrodiagnostic procedures including repetitive nerve study, single fiber EMG, and evoked potentials. We have our own neuromuscular biopsy suite and pathology lab. In addition to weekly pathology teaching sessions, fellows have an opportunity in reading muscle, nerve, and skin pathology with an attending physician. We also have the Autonomic Testing Lab through which we provide comprehensive evaluation of dysautonomia. Fellows also have an opportunity to learn its interpretation. Our weekly neuromuscular didactic course is well designed, starting from review of neuromuscular anatomy and principles of electrodiagnostic tests, to basic then advanced neuromuscular disorders and relevant electrodiagnostic tests. Fellows are expected to teach neurology residents rotating our service. After completing the training, fellows will acquire knowledge and skills required for practicing neuromuscular medicine and electrodiagnostic study independently.
