Considering: Neurology & PM&R Candidates

3 Letters of Recommendation requested for applying

The Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship at
Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) with Harvard Medical School is a one-year ACGME-accredited training program in electromyography (EMG) and neuromuscular medicine. Fellows receive training in the diagnosis and management of a variety of neuromuscular disorders in adults and children. Intensive training in electrodiagnostic testing and nerve/muscle biopsy are offered. Fellows also gain experience performing nerve ultrasound and single fiber EMG. Upon completion of this fellowship, trainees are eligible to sit for the Neuromuscular Medicine Subspecialty Boards (ABPN), and the Electrodiagnostic Medicine Boards (ABEM).

There are 6 neuromuscular medicine fellows each year. Fellows are divided into two cohorts and rotate in three-month blocks between MGH and BWH/Children's Hospital Boston. The curriculum includes several regularly scheduled teaching conferences including: a year-long faculty-run weekly series on electrodiadiagnostic and neuromuscular medicine, a weekly biopsy review, and a weekly EMG waveform conference.

Fellows rotate through the neuromuscular clinics and EMG laboratories at participating institutions (Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Children's Hospital which are all located in proximity to one another in downtown Boston). In depth exposure to the diagnosis and management of inherited and acquired neuropathies and myopathies, myasthenia gravis, and motor neuron diseases is gained through rotation in general neuromuscular and subspecialty neuromuscular clinics (i.e. the ALS or the multidisplinary muscle clinic). Fellows are expected to complete at least one academic project with mentorship from faculty, which is suitable for publication and/or presentation.

Each year, we accept fellows with diverse academic interests and career paths, and their chosen projects reflect this breadth of interests. Many graduates have gone on to have successful careers as physician scientists or clinical researchers. Others enter academic medicine or practice as clinicians. Others have chosen to participate in or lead clinical trials, lead quality improvement work, or are passionate about medical education. Some fellows have pursued an additional year of ALS, translational neuroscience or clinical trial fellowships at MGH following neuromuscular fellowship.

To apply, candidates must have completed an ACGME-accredited adult or pediatric neurology residency training program or an ACGME-accredited PMR residency and be eligible for board certification in Massachusetts. We are delighted to be participating in the Neuromuscular fellowship match. Interviews will remain virtual this year.

Please visit our program website for faculty, fellow and alumni listings and additional information.
