Our ACGME-accredited one year fellowship in Neuromuscular Medicine emphasizes clinical electrodiagnostic skills and development of expertise in diagnosis and management of patients with peripheral nerve, neuromuscular junction, and muscle disorders. The fellowship is structured to meet the certification requirements of the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the requirements of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for Added Qualifications in Neuromuscular Medicine. A second year of advanced study is available by special arrangement. Our faculty members include: Drs. Vern Juel, Lisa Hobson-Webb, Jon Morena, Karissa Gable, Janice Massey, and Donald Sanders, Jordan Mayberry, Xiaoyan Li, Natalia Gonzalez, Shruti Raja and Richard Bedlack and Dr. Natalie Katz. The fellowship includes experiences in outpatient neuromuscular clinics and inpatient neuromuscular consultation. There is a major time commitment in the electromyography laboratory where fellows master conventional nerve conduction and needle electromyography technique and perform needle muscle biopsies and peripheral nerve ultrasonography. Fellows may also learn advanced techniques such as single-fiber and quantitative electromyography. In addition, fellows receive training in EMG-guided chemodenervation for the treatment of dystonia and spasticity. Muscle histopathology and genetics are reviewed in scheduled conferences. There are opportunities for clinical research during the fellowship. The Duke Electromyography Laboratory is actively involved in clinical research and the development of new techniques of quantitative EMG analysis and neuromuscular ultrasonography.
