The Stanford Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship trains 3-4 fellows annually in the diagnosis, management, and cutting-edge therapeutics of neuromuscular disorders. A focused pediatric track is available with substantial pediatric MDA clinic and pediatric EMG/US training. The fellowship is centered around the modern, comprehensive facilities at Stanford Hospital and Clinics and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and Clinics. Additional elective time is spent at the renowned Forbes Norris MDA/ALS Research Center (San Francisco). //

The training is exceptional. Fellows see patients with a wide variety of rare disorders and bread-and-butter conditions. Diagnostic training includes EMG/NCS, neuromuscular ultrasound (including coordinated peripheral nerve injury clinics with neurosurgery), neuropathology, and, if desired, autonomic testing. Fellows learn to independently manage patients in their weekly Fellows Continuity Clinic and in rotations through the busy adult and pediatric MDA and ALS clinics, Neuromuscular Immunology Clinic, and the inpatient consultation and EMG services. Weekly didactic sessions, journal clubs, and debate clubs make for a varied and lively educational environment. //

Specifically, fellows will encounter a broad spectrum of common and uncommon neuromuscular disorders. There are faculty with specific interests in MG, CIDP, ALS, FSHD, myotonic dystrophy, CMT, NF, ALD/AMN, peripheral nerve trauma and repair, neuromuscular pulmonary diseases, and a variety of other conditions. //

The neuromuscular program is based on the Stanford University campus in the heart of Silicon Valley, allowing for collaboration across specialties. The Neuromuscular Clinical Trials Unit is exceptionally busy and fellows are exposed to a large number of studies. There is ample opportunity for clinical research, and an additional second year of training is encouraged for those building an academic career. //

Our faculty love teaching, as evidenced by the consistent #1 rating of our neurology clerkship by Stanford medical students. The neuromuscular attendings represent a diverse mix of training backgrounds, research and clinical interests, and career stages, allowing for excellent mentorship of our fellows. //

Stanford has a commitment to actively promoting diversity in medicine in all ways; we recognize the positive impact this has on the field as a whole and on individual patients. Stanford Neurology, GME, and the University host numerous programs to support and advocate for trainees of varied backgrounds. Quality of life in the Bay Area is wonderful. The sun shines year round and there's easy access to national parks, local treasures, cultural events, and more. Compensation for Stanford house staff is highly competitive and includes excellent medical benefits and other campus perks. //
