The Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital offers a one-year ACGME-approved clinical program offering broad exposure to all aspects of neuromuscular disorders.
Fellows learn Electrodiagnostic techniques including nerve conduction studies, repetitive nerve stimulation, needle EMG and ‘single fiber’ EMG. They also develop experience in performing skin biopsies, neuromuscular ultrasound, muscle and nerve histopathology, clinical evaluation of patients with neuromuscular diseases, therapeutics including novel applications of immunotherapies, and participation in clinical trials initiated by the division or as part of multicenter studies. Upon completion of this fellowship, trainees are eligible to sit for Neuromuscular Medicine subspecialty board (administered by ABPN), as well as the EMG board (administered by ABEM).
Neuromuscular fellows spend the majority of their time at EMG lab and neuromuscular clinic. In addition, they have weekly protected academic time and participate in multidisciplinary ALS center. The curriculum also includes monthly case conferences, monthly journal club discussions, didactics, and nerve and muscle biopsy pathology review. The Neuromuscular fellow can have 1-month elective rotation in DuPont Children’s hospital for pediatric neuromuscular medicine exposure.
