Children's Mercy - Kansas City EMG Laboratory

What prompted you to accredit your lab initially?

We wanted to ensure our EMGs were of the highest quality and the trainees that come through our lab experience education at the highest level.

What value or benefits have you seen from accreditation?

An increase in knowledge about why our lab is the best one in the city for pediatric-aged patients to come for EMG studies.

How did going through the accreditation process help you shore up or improve processes and procedures? Did you make any patient report improvements? If so, which ones?

We noticed we weren't regularly checking temperatures, so that was a big change for our studies.

What did you learn by going through the accreditation process?

The areas of the lab that we did on a regular basis that were so commonplace that we needed to ensure were continued. This allowed us to make sure we had more standard operating procedures compared to just doing what we have always done.

What was the most challenging portion of the application?

Ensuring that all of our protocols were up to date with the exact processes that we were doing.

Did anything about the accreditation process surprise you? If so, what?

How relatively easy it was, as we were doing so many things well!

Why should others accredit their laboratory?

To increase the knowledge of referring providers to know what lab will offer the highest quality studies.

Any additional comments?

I have found this process to be highly valuable! I can provide additional photos of me performing studies, if interested.
