2024 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule - Physicians Urged to Act

On November 2, 2023, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued its annual 2024 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) that announces finalized policy changes for Medicare payments under the PFS effective on or after January 1, 2024. One of the biggest areas of concern is the 3.37% reduction in the Medicare conversion factor. The AMA urges physicians to take action now by contacting lawmakers and advocating they cancel the 2024 cut and fix the unsustainable Medicare physician payment system.

AANEM cosponsored a resolution at the AMA’s House of Delegates (HOD) interim meeting, advocating for the crucial inclusion of the disability community and stakeholder input in discussing a significant change to the disability questions in the U.S. Census. AANEM and cosponsor American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) emphasized the necessity of the disability community and stakeholder involvement before implementing the proposed changes.

Advocacy in Action: State Liaison Leads the Way for Patient Advocacy in Washington and Beyond

Mohammad A. Saeed, MD, MS, is one of AANEM’s longest-standing state liaisons and most active members. He’s gone above and beyond meeting with congressional members on his own and building key relationships to help move AANEM’s advocacy efforts forward. Dr. Saeed invited congresswomen Marilyn Strickland (D-WA) in May 2022 and Dr. Kim Schrier (D-WA) in October 2022 to town hall events at his home in Washington to discuss current issues and focuses of Congress with their supporters and guests.

AANEM State Liaisons – Virtual Visits to Capitol Hill

AANEM returned to Washington, D.C. virtually for its 8th Annual Day on Capitol Hill in November. AANEM State Liaisons met with key legislative offices throughout the month of November to educate Senators and Representatives about electrodiagnostic (EDX) medicine and the current challenges facing the patient and professional community.
The Liaisons’ primary “ask” of the offices was for support of AANEM’s continued efforts to advance quality standards for EDX medicine to both improve patient care and stop fraud and abuse in this area. Nearly every office was very supportive of this cause and seem poised to take actionable steps in support of the effort in the new year. -
Significant Pay Cuts Averted for 2022

In response to a large, concerted effort on the part of many physician groups, including AANEM, Congress took action at the very end of 2021 to avoid an impending nearly 10% cut to Medicare payments that would have gone into effect January 1, 2022.
On December 21, 2021, Congress passed the Protecting Medicare and American Farmers from Sequester Cuts Act which avoided a 4% statutory cut from the PAYGO (Pay-As-You-Go Act of 2010) provisions, extended the moratorium on the 2% Medicare payment sequester, and mitigated the significant 3.75% reduction in the Medicare conversion factor. -
President Biden’s Initial Health Care Priorities

On Wednesday, January 20, President Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. In typical presidential fashion, shortly after being sworn in, President Biden issued several executive orders, many of which related directly to health care and, more specifically, the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, as is customary, members of President Trump’s administration, including the heads of HHS and CMS, resigned their positions prior to Biden’s swearing-in.
