CMS Telehealth Flexibilities Extended Through September 2025

Congress recently passed legislation extending key Medicare telehealth flexibilities through Sept. 30, 2025:

  • Continued reimbursement for audio-only telehealth for patients who may not have access to video-capable technology.
  • In-home telehealth services at the same rate as in-person visits.
  • Waived geographic and site restrictions, allowing beneficiaries to receive telehealth from any location (including their home).
  • Expanded provider eligibility (including PTs, OTs, SLPs).
  • Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and Rural Health Clinics (RHCs) remain distant site providers.
The requirement for in-person visits before tele-mental health services also remains on hold. While this is a vital step, it’s only temporary—these flexibilities will expire next fall without further congressional action.

AANEM strongly supports the permanent expansion of telehealth to ensure continued access to high-quality care for NM and EDX patients. As part of our ongoing advocacy, AANEM supported Resolution 227 at the 2024 AMA House of Delegates, which was adopted and called for eliminating the Dec. 31, 2024, “sunset” on Medicare telehealth reimbursement. The resolution urges long-term coverage consistent with RUC recommendations, recognizing telehealth’s vital role in improving access—especially in rural and underserved areas.

While the recent extension through September 2025 is a positive step, AANEM remains committed to securing lasting legislative solutions that support flexible, patient-centered care. To share how telehealth has impacted your practice, contact policy@aanem.org or call 507-288-0100.
