Sural and superficial peroneal (fibular) sensory NCS
Would appreciate thoughts and information on the following:
- which test is more accurate for identifying a disorder of the sural or superficial fibular nerve:
(a) testing sensation of a vibrating tuning fork
(b) measuring the sensory nerve action potential
- some texts on EDX state that sensory NCS is less reliable in the lower limbs than upper limbs; is that true?
- what percentage of healthy persons (not sure how to define "healthy") age 60+ years have absent sural or superficial fibular SNAP?

I enjoy participating in the AANEM Connect Forum for a number of reasons. There are very fundamental questions posed on a frequent basis that cause me to pause and ask myself, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’ Also, I continue to learn new things when others contribute their thoughts and experiences. Connect is an excellent opportunity for members to interact and to address any topic, including those that may not be discussed at an annual meeting or journal article.
