Considering: Neurology & PM&R Candidates

3 Letters of Recommendation requested for applying

The Mount Sinai Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship is approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Graduates of this program are qualified to take the neuromuscular medicine board examination administered by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. The Fellowship emphasizes clinical neuromuscular diseases, nerve conduction studies/electromyogram (NCS/EMG), and neuromuscular pathology, and offers ample opportunities to participate in clinical research.

Applicants are expected to have graduated from an ACGME accredited neurology residency program. Residents graduating from an ACGME accredited PMR program may be considered.

At our clinical neurophysiology laboratories, we perform approximately 1,400 EMG examinations per year. The wide range of patients enables you to observe and participate in a broad spectrum of procedures including neuromuscular ultrasound, botulinum toxin injections, motor unit analysis, and single-fiber EMG, muscle and nerve pathology, skin biopsies with intraepidermal nerve fiber density evaluation, and autonomic testing.

Fellows will learn a wide range of neuromuscular diseases, including motor neuron diseases, radiculopathies, plexopathies, neuropathies, myopathies, myasthenia gravis, neurogenetics, and neuromuscular complications associated with infections such as HIV and COVID-19.

The fellow will work with the neuromuscular team to learn all aspects of neuromuscular medicine, and will also participate in inpatient neuromuscular consultations. Fellows attend weekly ALS clinic and monthly neurogenetics clinic.

There is also a strong emphasis on teaching neurology residents and medical students through monthly neuromuscular conferences. In addition to teaching them when they rotate through the clinical neurophysiology laboratory.

The program accepts 2 neuromuscular medicine fellows and 1 clinical neurophysiology-EMG track fellow each year.
