Dale Colorado, DO, MPH, Receives 2026 AANEM Ernest Johnson Outstanding Educator Award

Dale Colorado, DO, MPH, built his career in NM and musculoskeletal (MSK) medicine around a fascination with how diagnostic tools sharpen clinical insight, and that interest grew from an early appreciation for the precision of EDX testing and its close connection to the physical exam. He was also intrigued by ultrasound (US) and its expanding applicability, particularly when combined with EDX to guide diagnosis and treatment in ways that meaningfully change patients' lives.

"I was fascinated by the precision of electrodiagnostic testing and how it was an extension of the clinical exam," he said. That curiosity deepened as he saw how US could complement EDX to localize pathology, refine diagnoses, and directly inform interventions. Seeing this combination make a significant difference for so many patients keeps him enthusiastic about the field and committed to continually advancing patient care.

His path toward education developed alongside his clinical training. Teaching had always been a natural interest, but it was during residency and fellowship—under the guidance of strong mentors—that he fully saw the impact of academic medicine. "Through fantastic mentors I was able to see the positive impact that could be made through teaching, research, and service/leadership, and I wanted to be a part of that," he said. Those experiences cemented his desire to work in an environment where education is central.

Over time, his greatest source of pride has become the accomplishments of his trainees. "I am most proud of seeing my former residents and fellows succeed, many of them becoming teachers, mentors, and leaders themselves," he said. Watching them grow into independent clinicians and educators underscores the long-term influence of investing in others and reflects the ripple effect that strong mentorship can create across NM and MSK care.

Receiving the AANEM Outstanding Educator Award carries deep personal meaning. "This symbolizes the encouragement and wisdom poured into me by my mentors, the continual love and support from my family, the joy of watching my trainees succeed, and the privilege of taking care of patients. I'm very honored to receive this award." He credits his family—especially his wife—as central to his journey. "My wife has always encouraged me to follow my passion for teaching and mentorship," he said. "My career in academics would not be possible without the incredible support from my family."

His commitment to education continues to grow through program-building and scholarship. He founded an interventional spine and MSK medicine fellowship that includes significant experience and education in EDX and US, which welcomed its inaugural fellow this past academic year. In addition to ongoing teaching locally and nationally, he hopes to further develop his research interests in US, exploring new ways to apply imaging to improve diagnosis, procedures, and patient outcomes.

For those considering the field—especially early medical students—he emphasizes both its impact and variety. Nerve injuries and disorders can profoundly affect patients' lives, and it is highly rewarding to pinpoint a nerve lesion on EDX and/or US and then provide targeted treatment. Sometimes this involves nerve injections, hydrodissection, or epidural injections that can offer immediate relief, translating diagnostic clarity into tangible benefit at the bedside. He enjoys the wide range of patients, pathology, and procedures in his work, noting that this diversity keeps daily practice engaging and intellectually stimulating.

To those starting their careers, he offers a simple but powerful piece of advice: seek out opportunities to teach and mentor. He notes that teaching markedly deepens one's own understanding while offering the chance to play a positive role in someone else's journey in medicine. That mindset—combining technical expertise in NM, MSK, EDX, and US with a sustained dedication to education and mentorship—embodies the spirit of the AANEM Outstanding Educator Award.
