AANEM’s Outstanding Service Award recognizes non-physician members for their significant contributions related to NM or EDX medicine education and AANEM. This year, Candise Dolan, CNCT, R.NCS.T., R.EEGT., is being recognized with the Outstanding Service Award for her dedicated service to her patients, technologists, residents and fellows, and AANEM.

Though she was not sure exactly in what capacity, Ms. Dolan knew she wanted to be involved in healthcare from early on. Then, in high school, she participated in a health career class where she rotated through different departments at the University of Utah Hospital. Eventually, Ms. Dolan volunteered in the EEG department. She was fascinated by brain activity and began her career as an EEG trainee. She then obtained her boards and worked for a private practice where she trained to perform NCS testing and EEG. Afterward, she returned to the University of Utah Hospital to perform NCSs.

Now a supervisor of the EMG laboratory at University Health, University of Utah, Ms. Dolan oversees all daily operations of NCS testing; training of fellows, new-hire technologists, and residents; and staffing of technologists. As a technologist, she says, “One might think that [we] do not get the opportunity to be so integrated in our field, but that is not the case. I am able to see different disease processes, different types of patient populations, and work with fellows and residents, and other trainees.” Ms. Dolan encourages technologists to get involved, noting the many opportunities for involvement in AANEM. “The staff, doctors, and other technologists want us to succeed and keep learning. Advocate for yourself with those you work with to be able to attend the AANEM meetings.” She encourages technologists to acquire their CNCT credential and grow in the ever-evolving field of neurodiagnostic medicine.

Ms. Dolan has been an active member of the AANEM since 2014, participating in the Technologist Education, ABEM Technologist Examination, and Annual Meeting Coordination Committees. She also participates as faculty at the AANEM Annual Meetings, leading workshops, sessions, and discussions. Ms. Dolan says she is honored to be a part of the field and is grateful to her friends, colleagues, and AANEM for their continued support and this award. “For me personally, it is gratifying to know that the hard work of studying and learning [was worth it], and with the help of my husband taking on extra kid duty when our family was young as I studied for boards, makes this all the sweeter,” she says.
