Physician Certification

The American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM) offers an ABEM Certification Exam that assesses your knowledge of basic EMG and nerve conduction study concepts. The Neuromuscular Ultrasound Certificate of Added Qualification (NMUS CAQ) began in 2019 and focuses on ultrasound anatomy, physics, muscle disease, focal nerve disease, and other related topics. To sit for the NMUS CAQ, you must be ABEM certified.

The ABEM Certification Examination is administered in Pearson Vue Testing Centers worldwide every spring. The computer-based examination contains approximately 200 multiple-choice questions, including waveform items and static images.

Requirements

ABEM Continuous Certification requires you to maintain your certification by demonstrating your commitment to life-long learning. This is achieved by earning 150 Category 1 CME activities within a 10-year cycle, paying an annual fee and successfully passing yearly CoreComp self-assessment questions.

The ABEM Neuromuscular Ultrasound (NMUS) Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) examination is administered online and proctored via AI technology in early fall every year. Active ABEM physician certification is required for NMUS CAQ eligibility.
