AANEM Practice Guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for the assessment and treatment of muscle and nerve disorders. Adherence to these guidelines will help ensure relevance, efficiency, cost effectiveness, and diagnostic accuracy in the practice of electrodiagnostic medicine and quality patient care.

The AANEM occasionally receives requests from other organizations to endorse evidence-based practice guidelines.  Leadership is purposeful about gathering input from subject matter experts within the association to assist in the review process which culminates in review and approval by the AANEM Board of Directors.

Creation of New Guidelines

AANEM members, committees, and sections are encouraged to submit guideline topics. The Practice Issues Review Committee reviews nominated topics on the basis of the following criteria:
  • Members' needs
  • Prevalence of condition
  • Health impact of condition for the individual and others
  • Socioeconomic impact
  • Extent of practice variation
  • Quality of available evidence
  • External constraints on practice
  • Urgency for evaluation of new practice technology
