Recap: 2017 AMA House of Delegates Annual Meeting

The American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates (HOD) met in Chicago, IL on June 10-14, 2017 for its annual meeting. Important issues reviewed by the HOD included: effectively addressing the current opioid crisis while seeking strategies and education to help those living with chronic pain, collaborating with the VA to ensure veterans have access to quality care and calling for new funding for the Veterans Choice Program, and defending access to quality care for refugees and detained immigrants.
AANEM was represented at the meeting by Bill Pease, MD, delegate, and Enrica Arnaudo, alternate delegate. The AANEM works closely with the delegations from the American Academy of Neurology and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Drs. Pease and Arnaudo also maintain close ties with their state delegations, Ohio and Delaware. The AANEM also participates in the Neurosciences Caucus, which consists of the specialty societies concerned with the nervous system. Of additional note, Claire Wolfe, an AANEM member and past president of the association, was re-elected as the delegate for the Senior Physicians Section.
The meeting concluded with the inauguration of David O. Barbe, MD, MHA, a board-certified family physician from Mountain Grove, Missouri, as the 172nd president of the AMA. During his inaugural speech, Dr. Barbe stressed that, in the current state of uncertainty surrounding U.S. healthcare, it is more important than ever for physicians to take the lead in reshaping medicine. He explained, “As physician leaders, we bear great responsibility within our profession and society. We must continue to put our patients before politics.”
The AANEM delegation is looking forward to the Interim meeting of the HOD this November in Honolulu, HI.
