ABEM Focuses on MOCP Relevancy

7/2/2013

ABEM Focuses on MOCP RelevancyThe American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM) Board of Directors met April 12- 13 in Chicago, IL. At the meeting, the Board reaffirmed its position that the Maintenance of Certification Program (MOCP) examination should be focused on relevant physician knowledge. The Board asked the MOCP Examination Chair and the Committee to ensure that the examination is an accurate measure of day-to-day clinical knowledge needed to practice electrodiagnostic (EDX) medicine.

“In 2012, the MOCP examination passing rate was 95%” noted ABEM Executive Director, Shirlyn Adkins, JD. “Physicians who are practicing EDX medicine regularly shouldn’t be worried about the examination and their ability to pass it.” Board Chair Dr. Peter Donofrio remarked that the ABEM certification examinations are valuable because, “Identifying competent practitioners of EDX medicine is particularly important in an environment in which the practice of medicine is rapidly changing.”

In addition, the Board discussed the need to begin long range planning to address changes in the current health care environment and its potential impact on the certification and MOCP examinations. The Board will be reviewing options to make the examination more cost effective to address candidates’ needs while providing patients a way to identify EDX practitioners who practice a high quality of care.

The Board establishes policies for the ABEM certification and MOCP examinations for physicians and the Certified Nerve Conduction Technologist examination. It will hold its next meeting in October 2013.
