Reduction of RVUs for EMG and NCS Codes

11/2/2012

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has published its work and practice relative value units (RVUs) for 2013. Unfortunately, CMS did not follow the RUC’s recommendation, but instead further reduced some of the RVUs for EMG and NCS codes. AANEM staff is studying the impact of these changes and will communicate the results next week.

We are in communication with the American Association of Neurology (AAN) and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPMR) to determine if there are grounds to appeal CMS’ reduction. We have until December 31 to file this appeal.

If you have specific questions related to these coding changes, please send them to policy@aanem.org. As more information becomes available it will be added to the AANEM 2013 Coding Toolkit.
