Recap: 2018 AMA House of Delegates Interim Meeting

The AMA’s House of Delegates (HOD) convened in Washington, DC in November 2018 for its Interim Meeting. During the 4 days the House was in session, they considered and debated more than 100 resolutions, covering a wide range of important topics affecting health care in the United States.

The HOD tackled a number of important and timely health policy issues, including continued efforts to address gun-related violence. The HOD passed policy calling for a better background-check system for buyers, a ban on 3D-printed firearms, and “gun violence restraining orders” for people arrested or convicted of domestic violence or stalking. There were also several resolutions passed to address survivors of sexual violence, as well as adopting an internal zero tolerance policy for sexual harassment within the HOD itself.

The HOD also called upon the AMA to develop model state laws and regulations to ensure the protection of physician credentialing when hospitals close. While states like Illinois and New York have policies to preserve medical staff credentialing files, many states do not have such policies and physicians are often not notified of the location of their files when a hospital closes. The HOD also took action to help protect income-based loan repayment programs for medical school graduates.

AANEM was represented at the meeting by William S. Pease, MD, delegate, Enrica Arnaudo, MD alternate delegate, and Millie Suk, JD, MPP, staff liaison. The AANEM works closely with the delegations from the American Academy of Neurology and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Drs. Pease and Arnaudo also maintain close ties with their state delegations, Ohio and Delaware. The AANEM also participates in the Neurosciences Caucus, which consists of the specialty societies concerned with the nervous system.

The HOD will reconvene for its Annual Meeting in June 2019 in Chicago, Illinois.
