CMS Delays 5010 Transaction Standards

3/19/2012

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced it will not initiate enforcement action against entities that have not moved to Version 5010 transaction standards until July 1, 2012.  Providers are encouraged to work with their Medicare Administrative Contractors in submitting and receiving version 5010 compliant transactions by this new deadline.

This deadline comes on the heels of a previous extension through March 31.  The original compliance deadline for use of the new version of the standard electronic transaction set for claims and remittance advice was January 1, but it has been pushed out again to allow resolution of a number of issues and challenges that continue to impede full implementation.

CMS believes the extension will allow 98% of the healthcare industry to reach the compliance goal and will continue to host calls to address outstanding issues.
