Remembering Margarete Di Benedetto

7/28/2015

AANEM mourns the passing of Col. (ret.) Margarete Di Benedetto, MD, an AANEM member since 1969. Di Benedetto died on July 25, 2015, at the age of 89. Born in Alt Dobern, Germany, she attended school and was educated as a physician in Germany. After moving to the United States, she worked as an ABEM certified doctor in physical medicine and rehabilitation. She worked many places over the years, including Cleveland, Baltimore, Boston, Milwaukee and Charlottesville, Virginia, before retiring in Ohio. In her later career she was recruited by the Army to establish and serve as Chairman of the Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Di Benedetto served on the AANEM Board, and many AANEM committees, including Symposia, Research and Regional Workshop. She was a regular AANEM annual meeting attendee and often a speaker. She was also awarded the AANEM distinguished physician award in 2006. Shirlyn Adkins, AANEM Executive Director recalled, “Margarete was always a strong supporter of AANEM and I enjoyed working with her.  After 9/11, because her children were afraid for her to fly, she drove all the way from the east coast to Albuquerque, New Mexico to honor her speaking engagement at the annual meeting.  She will be missed by her AANEM colleagues.”
