New Faces in the AANEM Office

We are pleased to announce two new staff members have joined the AANEM Executive Office staff.

Millie_Birr_padding.jpgMillie Birr, JD, MPP, assumed AANEM’s Health Policy Director role effective March 17. She has dual interests in law and public policy, having graduated from the University of Minnesota with both a Juris Doctorate and a Master’s in Public Policy.

Millie previously worked at Suk Law Firm, Rochester, MN, in the area of personal injury, where she dealt with clients’ health insurers to get medical bills paid. Her interest in public and health care policy and reform has manifested itself in her work with the Rochester Issues Forum and Rochester Planning and Zoning Commission. She also currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts-River Valleys and as an Ambassador for the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce.

Millie formerly was on the Steering Committee for the local Citizens League and was a Committee Page at the MN House of Representative’s Public Safety and Finance Committee.




Carrie_Winter_padding.jpgCarrie Winter began her role as Health Policy Manager also effective March 17. Carrie has five years of experience as a lab technician and quality specialist at Mayo Clinic, before starting her own childcare business in 2008. Her experience includes participation in installing, testing, training, and implementing transfusion management software, as well as serving on LEAN and Root Cause Analysis teams.

Carrie will finish her degree in Health Information Management from The College of St. Scholastica in May, with a minor in computer information science. Her coursework has included ICD-9, ICD-10, medical terminology, anatomy, and CPT coding, providing her an understanding of patient medical records, coding, billing, and the revenue cycle. Carrie also has an AAS degree in Medical Technology.

2/26/2014 - We are pleased to announce three new staff members to join the AANEM Executive Staff.

Lin GentlingLinda (Lin) Gentling began as finance/membership specialist on January 28. Lin’s career has focused on financial and information management, as well administration. It includes stints with Outward Bound, Olmsted County Public Works, and Mayo Clinic, where her work included 10 years as a financial analyst. Lin is an active volunteer locally, nationally, and internationally. Locally, she is involved in the Salvation Army, the Good Samaritan Health Clinic, several 5K runs, and other activities; nationally, she serves on two USATF running committees; and internationally, she represents the Americas in the International Association of Ultrarunning.

Lin earned her Master’s degree at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and her Bachelor’s at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN.





Derek McMurchieDerek McMurchie began as professional standards manager on January 31. He has spent the last five years of his career at the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR), the last two years leading its oral board examination given to 500 candidates, with more than 80 examiners and 15 proctors. He also developed and assisted in implementing a 12-month communications plan for ABPMR’s MOC program to educate its members on certification training. As examinations assistant, Derek also processed applications for both primary and subspecialty examinations and created and maintained ABPMR’s various publications.

Derek graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls with a Bachelor’s degree in marketing communications and a minor in journalism.





Carrie KirkpatrickCarrie Kirkpatrick began as the communications and graphics senior coordinator on February 24. She previously worked as the operations manager at Dowell Management, an association management and consulting firm in St. Paul, MN. Her work there included managing branding, communications strategy, and graphic design for more than 15 association clients. She also assisted in fulfilling the day-to-day activities—from event planning, member/board communications, website design and maintenance, membership research and surveys, and new product development—for 20 clients.

Carrie worked on a variety of political campaigns during her college years, ranging from communications work for the 2008 Republican National Convention to media relations/research/marketing for the Freedom Foundation of Minnesota. She eventually founded a marketing services company that provided consulting to political campaigns and businesses seeking assistance in online and digital marketing. A St. Olaf graduate, Carrie’s Bachelor’s degree is in political communications with an emphasis in statistics.
