AANEM Welcomes New President Dr. Vern Juel

The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) is pleased to announce the selection of Vern C. Juel, MD, as the 2015-16 president.  Dr. Juel succeeds Vincent J. Tranchitella, MD, whose term ended on Oct. 30, 2015.

“I look forward to leading AANEM at a time of expansion of the diagnostic and treatment options for neuromuscular diseases, as well as of the diversity of our membership that now includes technicians, basic researchers, and allied health professionals,” said Dr. Juel.
Dr. Juel is Chief of the Neuromuscular Section and Associate Professor of Neurology at Duke University School of Medicine and directs the Duke EMG Laboratory and Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship Programs.  Dr. Juel has served on many AANEM committees since becoming a member in 1995, including the Professional Practice, GME, and Program Committees. He chaired the first Neuromuscular (NM) Self-Assessment Committee to create examinations for trainee assessment and maintenance of certification.
He notes that AANEM has evolved from a group focused on EDX to a more diverse organization embracing developing techniques in neuromuscular medicine and new therapies for disorders for which treatment options had been limited or non-existent. “There also remains work to do regarding implementation of quality standards in EDX medicine and demonstrating the value provided by EDX in establishing an accurate diagnosis,” says Juel. “Thanks to the work of my predecessors, the Laboratory Accreditation program is now well established and provides quality standards that will ensure good patient care and may eventually influence reimbursement.”
AANEM Executive Director Shirlyn Adkins said, “Dr. Juel will continue to champion AANEM’s goal to become the go-to association for physicians and other allied health professionals in neuromuscular medicine. I look forward to working with him to continue growing our research and education initiatives to benefit patients and physicians.”
