AANEM Seeks Advisor to AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Committee

The AANEM is searching for physicians interested in coding and reimbursement issues and wishing to increase awareness of electrodiagnostic (EDX) and neuromuscular (NM) medicine to represent the AANEM at the AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Committee (RUC). The RUC advisor plays an important role in advocating for fair reimbursement for NM and EDX physicians and their practices. Selected advisors will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of the complex process and politics involved in determining physician payment.

For a more detailed explanation of RUC, download this document.

Basic Responsibilities of the RUC Advisor:
  • Assist with the presentation of AANEM coding perspectives.
  • Understand physician work and practice expense values as they relate to reimbursement.
  • Become an active member of the AANEM’s Professional Practice Committee (PPC) when appointment is confirmed. As a member of the PPC, the RUC Advisor is expected to attend meetings in the spring as well as during the AANEM Annual Meeting each fall.
  • Review Level of Interest forms distributed by the AMA and determine any interest in codes presented for review in close collaboration with AANEM’s CPT advisor and AANEM staff.
  • Work with staff and physician experts to develop surveys.
  • Review survey data and suggest appropriate recommended values (with input from other specialty societies).
  • Prepare for and present to the RUC with both staff and other specialty societies (conference calls and during RUC meetings).
  • Work closely with other specialty societies to review and select proposals before they are sent to the RUC to determine if AANEM should be involved and to what level.
  • Participate in additional workgroups as needed.
  • Show willingness and flexibility to travel—RUC Panel meets three times yearly, usually in the months of February, April, and September.
Our goal is to identify two physicians who can share the responsibility to decrease time away from your practice. All travel expenses are paid by AANEM.
