Restless
Legs Syndrome
What is Restless Legs
Syndrome?
Restless legs syndrome is a neurological disorder which causes an uncomfortable
feeling in a person's legs while they are sitting or lying down. If one
moves their legs or walks around, the symptoms get better. Symptoms may
not appear during the day if a person is active. Since symptoms appear
when a person is inactive, they may have difficulty falling asleep and
staying asleep at night. This leads to fatigue during the day.
Who Gets Restless Legs Syndrome?
As many as 12 million people in the United States may have restless legs
syndrome. It affects men and women equally, and can begin at any age.
How is Restless Legs Syndrome Diagnosed?
There is no specific diagnostic test for restless legs syndrome. The doctor
will review your medical history and your family history, and ask you
questions about your symptoms. Electrodiagnosis may be used to rule out
other disorders. You may also be sent to see a sleep specialist.
How is Restless Legs Syndrome Treated?
Sometimes a lifestyle change can help a person with restless legs syndrome,
and some medications can be prescribed to help the symptoms.
