Dear Jim:
I received your letter of the fifteenth informing me that the American
Assocation of Electromyography and Electrodiagnosis now exists following
its organization in Chicago in August of this year.
My best wishes and hearty congratulations to the men who did all the hard
work in getting this organization set up and functioning. I am sorry I
could not go east with you.
I note that I have been appointed Chairman of the Committee on Constitution
and By-Laws. This is a real honor for someone who was unable to even attend
the organization meeting. I accept with a great sense of responsibility
and will be happy to do everything I can to expedite the organization
of this important constituent of the association. Would you please send
me a list of the various officers and their address so I may be informed
and know with whom to communicate.
Congratulations again for the work accomplished in Chicago. I hope it
will not be too long before we have a publication for this worthy subspecialty
of medicine.
Sincerely yours,
J. Sloan Berryman, MD

Dear Ed:
It was nice to see you in Chicago last month and I want to congratulate
Dr. Jones and yourself on the splendid paper you gave. I hope that this
paper will get published in the near future because these nerve voltages
have been disturbing to the people doing clinical electromyography, and
in all probability have in some instances been misinterpreted as being
denervation fibrillation voltages. I would greatly appreciate a repirint
of this article as soon as it is published and likewise would appreciate
reprints of other articles that you have already published on electromyography
and electrodiagnosis.
You will recall that I mentioned to you that an American Association of
Electromyography and Electrodiagnosis was organized in Chicago on August
29, 1953. Enclosed is a list of the founder members of this organization
and I am happy to say that all of them agreed that acive membership should
be extended to you immediately. The initiation fee for active members
is fifteen dollars and the dues are ten dollars annually. If you do desire
membership, please mail your check, made out to the American Association
of Electromyography and Electrodiagnosis, to Arthur A. Rodriquez, MD in
Chicago, Illinois. Shortly after Rod receives this, you will receive a
copy of the constitution and by-laws together with a complete list of
the officers, council, and committees. In addition, you will receive at
a later date a certificate of the Association.
I would like you to serve as the chairman of a committee on Instrumentation
and Technique, Ed, so please let me know right away if you will accept
this appointment. The first scientific meeting will be held in Washington,
DC next year the day before the American Congress starts and I hope you
will favor us with a paper on basic neurophysiology. jerry Gersten is
the chairman of the program committee so the title of your paper could
be sent to him.
Again, let me say that it was nice to have that visit with you in Chicago
and I will hope to be hearing from you very soon.
Very sincerely yours,
James G. Golseth, MD

H. Worley Kendell, MD
Medical Director
Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Peoria, Illinois
Dear Dr. Kendell:
It gives me pleasure to tell you that on August 29, 1953 an American Association
of Electromyography and Electrodiagnosis was organized in Chicago. Enclosed
is a list of the men who attended the organizational meeting and all of
them agreed that active membership should be extended to you immediately.
The initation fee for active membership is fifteen dollars and the annual
dues are ten dollars so if you care to accept membership, please make
out a check to the American Association of Electromyography and Electrodiagnosis
for twenty-five dollars and send it to the Secretary and Treasurer, Arthur
A. Rodriquez, MD, 6630 South Kimbark Avenue, Chicago 37, Illinois.
The first scientific meeting of the organization will be held in Washington,
DC next year the day prior to the beginning of the American Congress and
if you care to give a paper, please send the title to the program chairman,
who is Jerome Gersten, MD, 4200 East Ninth Ave, Denver 7, Colorado.
After Rod receives your check, you will receive a copy of the constitution
and by-laws together with a list of the officers and committees. In addition,
you will shortly receive a certificate of membership in this organization.
May I say in closing, Dr. Kendell, that I sincerely trust you will accept
this membership because I believe this organization can do a fine job
in advancing the field of electromyography and electrodiagnosis.
Very sincerely yours,
James G. Golseth, MD

Dear Jim:
I am a little late in answering your letter because of a duck-hunting
expedition (successful). However, I have forwarded to Doctor Rodriquez
the fees for membership in the American Association of Electromyography
and Electrodiagnosis.
You have asked that I serve as chairman of a committee on instrumentation
and technique. I will be happy to do so as I believe that much needs to
be done to organize existing information on these subjects, to foster
certain critical studies which are required if we are ever to standardize
electromyographic procedure, and to educate persons doing electromyography
on the basic principles of the technic. I hope that these general aims
for the committee will meet the approval of the group.
Yours very truly,
Edward H. Lambert, MD

Paul Hoefer, MD
Presbyterian Hospital
New York, New York
Dear Dr. Hoefer:
In August 1953 a group of physicans, headed by Dr. J. Golseth and interested
in electromyography, met at the Palmer House in Chicago. As a result,
the American Association of Electromyography and Electrodiagnosis was
organized. It was their unanimous expression that you should be invited
to active membership immediately. The initiation fee is $15.00 and the
dues for the first year $10.00.
The object of this organization shall be "to increase and extend
as widely as possible our knowledge of Electromyography and Electrodiagnosis
and to promote professional and personal assocation of those physicans
and surgeons most interested in electromyography and electrodiagnosis."
The first scientific meeting will be held in Washington DC next year some
time in late August and we hope that you may favor us with a scientific
paper at that time. Doctor Jerome Gersten (at 4200 East Ninth St., Denver,
Colorado) is the chairman of our program committee so the title of your
paper may be referred to him.
We know you have many obligations but sincerely hope you can see your
way clear to accepting membership in our organization.
Very sincerely yours,
Arthur A. Rodriquez, MD, Secretary |
