Process Overview

Accreditation Process Overview

Step 1

Submit the completed application with supporting materials and pay the appropriate fee. The applicant will receive confirmation when payment is submitted.

Step 2

The AANEM Accreditation Committee and Subcommittee will review the application and submit the recommendation to the AANEM Board of Directors as to whether the laboratory should be granted accreditation or provisional accreditation, or denied accreditation. The AANEM Board of Directors has final approval of all accreditation applications.

Step 3

A letter indicating the laboratory’s status will be sent to the primary contact. The letter will also include a section of information about the newly accredited laboratory’s address, phone number, and name of lab.  Applicants will reply back so that information can be added to the AANEM’s “Find an Accredited Lab” section of the website, and for the correct spelling of any printed certificates.  Applicants granted accreditation will enter a five-year cycle for reaccreditation.
Laboratories granted provisional accreditation will have 6 months to resolve any concerns identified by the Accreditation Committee. Applicants denied accreditation may reapply in one year.

Exemplary Status

Accreditation with Exemplary status is the highest level of accreditation recognized by the AANEM. Exemplary status is granted to laboratories whose Lab Medical Director is certified by at least one of the following boards:
  • American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM)
  • American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) in Clinical Neurophysiology or Neuromuscular Medicine
  • American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation in Neuromuscular Medicine

Accreditation Fees

Laboratories will be assessed the following fees for the accreditation process:
  • Accreditation Fee (1-3 physicians) - $1000
  • Reaccreditation Fee - $750
  • Fee for Each Physician over 3 - $200
  • Fee per Satellite Laboratory - $200
Accreditation lasts for five years.  No additional fees will be charged within the five year period.  The Reaccreditation Fee is due at the time of reaccreditation.  Additional physicians and satellite laboratory fees apply during both initial accreditation and reaccreditation.

*Application is customized based on the staff composition of each laboratory.
