What is Neck Pain?

Neck pain can be caused by many different reasons -- poor posture, a spine problem, muscle inflammation, radiculopathy, strain injury, or trauma. The neck may feel stiff, and there may be pain in the neck, shoulders, and head.

Who gets Neck Pain?

Since the cause of neck pain is so varied, anyone can have it. Most people do have neck pain at some time in their life.

How is Neck Pain diagnosed?

After taking the patient's history, a physician may perform some physical tests. An EMG or MRI can also be performed to try to determine the source of the pain.

How is Neck Pain treated?

Treatment depends on the reason for the neck pain. In some cases, a change of posture will correct the pain. Exercises to strengthen neck muscles and improve range of motion is often helpful. Medications can be used if the problem is caused by muscle inflammation. In some cases, surgery is required.
