CMS Releases Comparative Billing Reports on Sudomotor-Function Testing

4/19/2017

In March, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a national provider Comparative Billing Report (CBR) on Sudomotor-Function Testing. The CBR, produced by CMS contractor eGlobalTech and its partner, Palmetto GBA, will focus on providers that refer patients for sudomotor-function testing (using CPT Code 95923). This includes providers who self-refer patients for the performance of the testing. The CBR will contain data-driven tables with an explanation of findings that compare these providers’ billing and payment patterns to those of their peers in their state and across the nation. One of the areas that the CBR specifically looks at is referrals for testing done by non-neurologists.

CBRs give providers an opportunity to compare themselves to their peers, check their records against data in CMS files, and review Medicare guidelines to ensure compliance. CBRs are for educational and comparison purposes and do not indicate the identification of overpayments. These reports do NOT indicate a precursor to an audit.

This CBR was faxed or mailed to approximately 2,000 providers who referred patients for sudomotor-testing between October 1, 2013, and September 30, 2016. Recipients were selected by an analysis of data from claims paid by traditional Fee-for-Service Medicare that identifies them as having different billing patterns when compared to their peers. Contact information used in producing and disseminating the CBRs is taken from the information providers have listed in the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES), and fax is the default dissemination method. The reports are only accessible to the providers who receive them; they are not publicly available.

If you receive a CBR and have questions, please contact the CBR Support Help Desk at 1-800-771-4430 or CBRsupport@eglobaltech.com or visit the CBR website at www.cbrinfo.net. Also, you are invited to join eGlobalTech and Palmetto GBA for an informative presentation of CBR201703 during a webinar that will be hosted on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, from 3:00 – 4:00 PM Eastern Time. During the webinar, providers will have the opportunity to interact with the content specialists and submit questions about the report. More information is available at https://www.cbrinfo.net/cbr201703.html.

Send Your CBRs to AANEM

Please send copies of any CBRs that you or your office receive to the AANEM policy department at policy@aanem.org or via fax at 507-288-1225. AANEM policy staff will compile the data on our members and conduct a detailed analysis of our members’ CBRs versus national averages. All CBRs submitted to the policy department will be kept strictly confidential and no identifying information will be shared with other members or outside groups.
