2018 Physician Fee Schedule Final Rule: What Does it Mean for Reimbursement?

12/4/2017

On November 2, 2017, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the final rule updating payment policies and payment rates for physicians under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) for 2018. Within this document and addendum are updates to the relative value units (RVU), which include work RVUs, practice expense (PE) RVUs, malpractice (MP) RVUs, as well as the Medicare conversion factor.

Below is a summary of some of the changes affecting reimbursement for AANEM members for the calendar year (CY) 2018.
  • Work RVUs for all electrodiagnostic (EDX) and neuromuscular (NM) codes monitored by AANEM remained unchanged for CY 2018. Please visit our website for more information.
  • Needle EMG codes (95861-95887) saw small reimbursement increases due to increased PE and malpractice RVUs. Increases to RVUs ranged from 0.05% to 5.80%.
  • Nerve Conduction Study codes (95907- 95913) saw small reimbursement increases due to increases in PE and malpractice RVUs. Increases to RVUs ranged from 1.04% to 2.57%.
  • Autonomic Testing codes saw decreases due to downward adjustments of PE and MP RVUs.  Physician work RVUs remained the same for these codes.
  • Visual Evoked Potential testing (95930) saw a decrease due to a downward adjustment of its PE.
  • The Ultrasound of Extremity codes saw a decrease in the PE of the complete study (76881), which resulted in a lower RVU. However, the limited study (76882) saw in increase of its PE which resulted in a significant increase
  • The conversion factor for CY 2018 has been finalized at $35.9996, which is up $0.1109 from the conversion factor of $35.8887 used in CY 2017.
