The NYU School of Medicine Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship program is a one year subspecialty training program devoted to acquiring clinical and electrodiagnostic skills necessary to evaluate and treat patients with neuromuscular diseases, epilepsy, sleep, and autonomic disorders. Fellows perform clinical evaluations and electrodiagnostic studies on the inpatients and outpatients referred to our department under direct supervision of faculty attending physicians. In the first three months of the fellowship, the fellows will learn how to analyze the EMG of extremity, trunk, and facial muscles and interpret the results of the nerve conduction study in a coherent fashion, with a goal of providing a primary and secondary diagnosis of the patient's condition. In addition, the fellow will analyze the evoked potentials including somatosensory, acoustic, and visual EPs. One half day a week the fellows will attend a neuromuscular clinic and, with their understanding of basic physiology, be able to integrate neurophysiological results in diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders. Additional training is provided in intraoperative monitoring, neurophysiology of Parkinson's disease, and epilepsy. Research projects are ongoing in the department, and fellows are expected to present cases at bi-monthly neuromuscular rounds and monthly journal clubs with attending supervision. Our program is ACGME approved and fulfills the requirements as stipulated by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and added qualifications in Clinical Neurophysiology of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Inc.
