Coding Advocacy

The AANEM advocates for its members through its involvement in the AMA’s Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Relative Value Scale Update Committees (RUC).

The AANEM advocacy helps ensure that CPT codes and reimbursement rates accurately reflect the work performed by EDX physicians.

The AANEM Policy Department also routinely reviews and comments on Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) Edits, physician work values, and proposed and final rules issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS).

CPT and RUC News

The AMA CPT Editorial Panel has created a workgroup to examine CPT coding of intraoperative monitoring (IOM). The workgroup is discussing possible changes to reflect new practice models and advances in technology since the creation of CPT code 95920 almost 20 years ago. The AANEM, other interested societies, and IOM physicians are all participating in the workgroup.

The recommendations of the workgroup will be reviewed by the CPT Editorial Panel. The panel will select a course of action and any code changes will be reflected in the following year’s code book. More information will be made available during the coming months within the parameters of the CPT process.
