Member Services

Supporting the efforts to ensure high quality, cost effective, ethical care for patients
  • Welcomed 254 new physicians, 34 technologists, and 4 PhD researchers and collaborators into membership
  • Streamlined and innovated the member join and renewal processes for the new website to be launched in 2015
  • Conducted a survey that provided insight into the most valuable benefits provided to members and areas that can be improved in order to better meet member needs
  • Provided ongoing personal assistance to members who contacted the AANEM with questions related to issues impacting their practice
  • Delivered news and announcements to members through website updates, 26 e-newsletters, hundreds of Facebook and Twitter posts, four member mailings, and the biannual AANEM News


Advocacy

Defining and advocating for quality patient care
  • Led AANEM’s first Congressional Hill Day in Washington, DC, meeting with 76 congressional offices to educate and advocate for fair and appropriate reimbursement
  • Reviewed and commented on nearly 20 medical policies of public and private payers
  • Partnered with several organizations, including CIDP-GBS Foundation International, in drafting a congressional sign-on letter requesting, and successfully obtaining, 2013 EDX claims data
  • Worked with the Office of the Inspector General, private payers, and other entities on recognizing and stopping fraud and abuse in EDX medicine
  • Updated key AANEM position statements and drafted two new position statements
  • Collaborated with American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and American Academy of Neurology at RVS Update Committee (RUC), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and AMA House of Delegates meetings to ensure our members have a voice in reimbursement and policy-making
  • Provided education on various Medicare incentive programs on the AANEM website and through newsletter articles


Education

Developing and promoting best practice standards

  • Planned and held the AANEM 61st Annual Meeting in Savannah, GA:
    • Featured more than 100 sessions including 10 courses, 11 symposia, 49 workshops, nine special interest group sessions, and two half-day plenary sessions focusing on neuromuscular medicine
    • Held a new collaborative session with the Peripheral Nerve Society
    • Conducted a guided discussion with poster presenters selected for the President’s Research Initiative recipients
    • Displayed 177 total posters
    • Hosted the final “EMG Talk,” a session led by Lawrence Robinson, MD, and William Litchy, MD, featuring fictional cases that ran for 19 years
    • Showcased products and services from 50 exhibiting companies
  • Developed and proctored the first online EDX and NM Self-Assessment Examinations. The EDXSAE was proctored at 144 institutions for 769 registered candidates, 428 of whom took the online version. The NMSAE was offered to 43 institutions and 91 registered candidates, 80 of whom took the online version.
  • Offered new educational resources in the online AANEM Marketplace including:
    • Seven new podcasts
    • Seven invited reviews with CME
    • Four case studies
    • Four ethics vignettes
    • Released two new DVDs
    • “Repetitive Nerve Stimulation” by Nandedkar Productions
    • “Learn EMG” by Devon Rubin, MD
    • Three new online learning tools:
      • “EMG Waveform Trainer”
      • “Muscle and Anatomy Localization for Needle EMG”
      • 10 new “Real EMG” cases
    • Books:

Research

Encouraging a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care and developing ethical relationships with others who can advance the industry

  • Granted International Finance Assistance Award funds to four physicians from disadvantaged countries, which allowed them to attend the annual meeting
  • Presented a record breaking 27 Junior Member Recognition Awards to residents and fellows who were first authors on abstracts
  • Presented Irina Shklyar, MD, with the Golseth Young Investigator Award and Daniel P. Schwards, MD, with the Golseth Runner-Up Award
  • Presented K. Ming Chan, MD, with the Best Abstract Award and Alexis Bashinski Shaefer, MD, with the Best Abstract Runner-Up Award
  • Granted 10 President’s Research Initiative Awards for research related to “New Technology for Diagnosis and Treatment in Neuromuscular Disease”
