ABEM MOCP Annual Recording Fees Due by Dec. 31
12/18/2014  If you are enrolled in the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine’s (ABEM) Maintenance of Certification Program (MOCP), your deadline for submitting your annual CME recording fee ($30) and form is December 31 to avoid a late fee.  

Kathy Smith Retires After 27 Years
12/2/2014  In 1987, attendees at the San Antonio annual meeting of the American Association of Electromyography & Electrodiagnosis’ (AAEE, AANEM’s predecessor) were introduced to a new Meeting Manager, Kathy Smith. Twenty-seven years and 27 annual meetings later, Kathy has announced her retirement, effective December 12, 2014. 

Fighting to Ensure Quality in Neuromuscular and EDX Medicine
12/2/2014  AANEM’s health policy director, Millie Birr, JD, MPP, exhibited at the National Healthcare Antifraud Association’s (NHCAA) Anti-Fraud Expo in Dallas in mid-November.  More than 1,000 private and public payers and healthcare anti-fraud law enforcement personnel attended the conference, with 100 attendees stopping by the AANEM booth. 


2015 Fee Schedule—What Does This Mean for Reimbursement?
11/18/2014  On October 31, 2015, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the Final Rule for the 2015 Medicare Physician Payment Schedule. This document and addendum includes updates to the relative value units (RVU) for all medical procedures.

11/5/2014  The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) is pleased to announce the selection of Vincent J. Tranchitella, MD, to lead the organization in 2014-15 as its new president.

2015 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Released
11/5/2014  The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued its final payment rules for 2015 on October 31. The rules total nearly 3,000 pages in length. A cursory review indicates little to no direct impact on electrodiagnostic (EDX) medicine, as was indicated by the proposed rules released in July.

Dr. Chan Receives Best Abstract Award at the AANEM 61st Annual Meeting
10/20/2014  K. Ming Chan, MD, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, will receive the award for his work entitled, “Post-Surgical Electrical Stimulation Enhances Sensory Function Following Digital Nerve Transection: A Double Blind, Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.”

Dr. Shklyar Receives Golseth Young Investigator Award
10/20/2014  While the Golseth Young Investigator Award is meant to showcase outstanding research by physicians in early practice, it is rare that the recipient is as young as this year’s Irina Shklyar, MD, of New Haven, CT.

Guideline Offers Direction in Genetic Testing for Certain Types of Muscular Dystrophy
10/13/2014  A new guideline from the AANEM and American Academy of Neurology  recommends guidance on how doctors should evaluate the full picture in order to determine what genetic tests may best diagnose a person’s subtype of limb-girdle or distal muscular dystrophy.
